Do you spend time every day in the Bible?

Dr. Chas RowlandDo you spend time every day in the Bible? Are you devoted to a daily time of devotion unto God? Spiritual disciplines are critical to our spiritual health and maturity. If you are not giving that daily time to God, let me encourage you to do it. But how can we protect the quality of our time alone with God? Let me offer a few suggestions.

First, your spiritual devotional life must be God-centered. A devotion time is not a time of introspection where you learn more about yourself. Your devotion should not be self-focused; it should be God focused. Simply ask yourself, "What is the focus of this devotion?" If the answer is anything other than God, maybe you should find a new subject to devote yourself to.

Secondly, it must be Bible based and Bible driven. Any devotional material should be derived from Scripture truths and it should remain consistent with Biblical principles. Ps. 119:9-10 says, "How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments!" The safest way to ensure that a particular devotional material is consistent with Scripture is to make sure that its ideas emerge out of and flow parallel to a Biblical text.

Finally, spirituality must involve effort on our part as well as empowering on God's part. You cannot manipulate spiritual renewal; it only comes from the hand of God. He grants all spiritual growth. However, God grants spiritual growth to His children who diligently seek Him. Col. 3:1-3 says, "If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God." We are to focus all our attention and efforts upon Him. The benefits of such attention include our lives being covered by Him. When you cover yourself in Christ every day, your devotional life will start to impact every area of your life.
